Chapter 4

"Your love of learning could make you a valuable employee"
If you go to a job and you are not opened minded it wont work. You will become miserable. We should never feel the need to stop learning the more you know the better life is.If you never get tired of learning you will only become a master at what you do. Being a valuable employee helps you achieve more.

Work Smarter, Not Harder
Example get a degree so life can be easier instead of working a retail job the rest of your life

Chapter 3

Positive thinking creates a positive future."
This quote is stating if you think positive your able to conquer things that will help you gain more!

"When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change"

This is a good quote it lets people know that if you look at things in a positive way positive will happen. Ex: If you look at a class like its hard your going to fail then you may just feel based on your views. I believe you should always look at the good in situations. Positive thinking helps you overcome negativity.

"acquiring a lot of knowledge and information without thinking of its value"
I like this quote because being a college student we take several classes. We work hard to pass but if your not  utilizing the knowledge you've gained it can be a waste of time. For ex most of us have taking at least one biology class if you didn't take key to how the body works and why biology is important you was in it for a grade and didn't gain anything. Everything you learn should be compared to your day to day life.

informative interview

An informational interview is a meeting where a job seeker asks for advice rather than employment. Rather than get a job offer, a job seeker uses an informational interview to:
  1. Learn more about a company or job function
  2. Inquire about job leads
  3. Network
For job seekers, informational interviews can secure meetings with managers, shape positive first impressions, and develop relationships that may pay off in the future. Managers are open to informational interviews because:
  1. They do not require a big time investment. Informational interviews can be done during lunch or during an afternoon coffee break.
  2. They can give managers an opportunity to identify new talent, either for now or in the future, without a formal recruiting process.
  3. Informational interviews allow managers to give advice. Who doesn’t like to have their ego stroked?
7 Secrets to Successful Informational Interviews
Here are my tips on how you can succeed in your informational interviews:
  • How to ask for an informational interview. After you’ve identified who you want to meet, ask friends, family, ex-coworkers, & fellow alums if they have contacts at a certain company or a particular line of work. Utilize social networking tools, such as LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter, to find contacts. In the introduction e-mail, keep it short and simple. Provide some background information on yourself and explain why you want to meet.
  • Clearly define what you want to get out of the meeting. If you don’t know what you want, the person on the other side of the table will have a hard time helping you. I’d recommend going for easy wins such as learning more about a company or a job function. So prepare questions such as: “What do you like working for company X?” or “When you think about successful folks in position Y, what made them successful?”
  • Getting a job should not be your immediate goal. Job seekers often ask for a job at the beginning. Resist that temptation. If the manager does have a job, asking for it at the beginning is premature, especially if you haven’t proven yourself. If he or she does not have a job, you and the manager have to overcome the early letdown. Instead, focus on asking good questions and creating a good impression. Then, at the end, do ask if the manager is hiring, but don’t push it.
  • Go with the flow. Some managers use the informational interview as an informal job interview. If the manager wants to deviate from your prepared list of questions and ask you more formal job questions, let him or her do so. Who knows? You might get a job offer at the end of the interview.
  • Prepare, prepare, prepare. Informational interview can range from an informal career chat to a structured interview. Prepare for any scenario. Have those general career questions ready, and at the same time, don’t be surprised if the interviewer asks tough questions like, “What’s your biggest weakness?” Remember the saying, “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.”
  • Dress for success. It’s always worth reminding: dress professionally.
  • Don’t forget to follow-up and send the thank you letter. Don’t forget to send a thank-you e-mail or letter after the informational interview. In addition, send updates every couple of weeks. The manager invested time into your career; he or she will be interested in your progress. And who knows, that manager may not have had openings a while ago, but he or she may be hiring now.

Job Interview

 http://www.bls.gov/oco/oco20045.htm

Preparation:
  • Learn about the organization.
  • Have a specific job or jobs in mind.
  • Review your qualifications for the job.
  • Be ready to briefly describe your experience, showing how it relates it the job.
  • Be ready to answer broad questions, such as "Why should I hire you?" "Why do you want this job?"
  • What are your strengths and weaknesses?"
  • Practice an interview with a friend or relative.
The steps that are listed for this website I feel best describes how you should prepare for a interview. Before any interview you should work on your confidence level far as speaking and having direct eye contact. The key to getting a job is having confidence within yourself and your achievements. Being able to speak proudly about you accomplishments and the knowledge you have that qualifies you for the job.

 Be On Time
Be on time for the interview. On time means five to ten minutes early. If need be, take some time to drive to the office ahead of time so you know exactly where you are going and how long it will take to get there.
being on times or even being early shows how bad you want the job also shows your resposible.

Maintain eye contact. Look the interviewer in the eye without staring. Not doing so is often perceived as shiftiness not shyness. This is the most valuable thing for a interview it shows you have confidence.

Resume Writing

This website I found credible explains how you should state certain information under education. The first one being if your applying for a internship as a undergraduate listing the college you attend then the high-school under also listing the important activities you did in high-school like volunteering. For graduates all the relevant  courses taken should be listed also your gpa if its over 3.0. all honors in awards achieved should also be mention. Never include your grade school or middle school.

This website was credible because it explains about references. Why you should not list your references on your resume  Tell the employer simply that, "References are available upon request," or, "References gladly furnished upon request." Do not list references on your resume. Instead, have them typed on a separate sheet of paper and have them available if the employer asks for them. You should have three to five references listed. They should be people who know you and your work — not your relatives. Be sure to get each person’s permission to use him or her as a reference. Due to people having there own schedules its very important to inform them that you use them as a reference and when the job might be calling so they don't receive the phone call at the wrong time. Which can cause the job to be discouraged your references represents you

This website was credible for explaining the importance of the objective. The objective is basically the resume section that contains the career plan statement of the applicant in relation to what the employer or company looks for. This is important because it introduces you to the employer. A lot of time should be put into trying to come up with the appropriate objective. Background information should be gathered and read before you do a objective .The objective is job specific. It should be no more than three sentences.

Chapter 2

"Spinning in the wind and going nowhere fast"(p19)
This qoute to me explains when people are not organized with everything going on in there life it leads to chaos. When you have a lot of decisions to make at once you ted to not make any improvement. Being overwhelmed leads to stress and most of the time people that are stressed ted to give up on things that are important. having school work in taking care of your house hold can be overwhelming what helps the situation is being organized.Staying on top of schedule appointments cutting out time for studying. keep a clean home also helps me. This quote represents why some people say there moving but not going anywhere. For example being in school and passing on class by continuing to fail most of your classes represent a person that is moving but not going anywhere fast.

"When we take what we learn in one sphere of our life and apply it to another our knowledge and understanding increase substantially"(p20)
I agree with this statement a lot  people forget being in grade school and the teacher always saying "make sure to keep your desk and cubbie clean".Even when parents yelled about keeping your room and book-bag cleaned it helps in the work place. Having to maintain different task helped us later on in life be able to keep things going smoothly. Being organize with small task at a young age helped with being organized as an adult. Keeping important things organize now should be easier. Knowing where the bill statements are important documentation you can go right and your folder and get has progressed. Our knowledge should have increased substantially on the importance of being organized.

"Self-discovery requires time and focus"(p22)
This quote defines how I look at people that are lazy a lot of people go through life not knowing who they are or what they want. I feel a reason for this is that people don't take time out to get to know themselves. Today in society people are more concern with whats the hottest brand or whose the hottest rapper instead of finding out what their favorite color is.
